The Role

Planet has established a wholly-owned subsidiary, Planet Labs Federal (hereafter, Planet Federal) in order to enable deeper engagement with the US Federal Government.  Planet Federal is seeking a Washington, DC-based Vice President of Sales to continue to build and lead the execution of our business growth.  You will preside over the successful development, implementation, and execution of a sales and business development strategy for various satellite imagery and imagery-derived analytical products.   You will be a member of Planet Federal’s leadership team, be accountable to Planet Federal’s Board of Directors as well as to the leadership of Planet.  In this role you may often be the “face of Planet Federal” in the space and geospatial community in Washington, DC, nationally, and internationally.  You will be a key interface with the Planet Executive team, particularly with Planet’s Chief Commercial Officer, and Chief Strategy Officer.  Above all else, you are inspired by Planet Federal's unique value proposition and want to join us on our mission to enable the many missions of the U.S. government with Planet’s core commercial products.  As we say at Planet,  see change, change the world.      

In leading the Sales team, you will:

  • Provide visionary and strategic leadership to the sales and business development team.  
  • Collaborate on the development of key strategies for customer engagement and communications.
  • Lead, direct, and coach a team of Account Executives and Business Development professionals through a rigorous sales process to build an extensive pipeline of new sales leads, provide product and sales demonstrations to prospective customers, and formulate appropriate business relationships with accounts.
  • Have personal accountability to Planet Federal and Planet leadership, including the Planet Chief Commercial Officer, for accurate sales forecasts, well maintained CRM tools, account plans, deal reviews, territory assignments, and pipeline growth metrics.  
  • Understand and draw out the nuances of the federal government geospatial market and its various requirements for commercial satellite imagery and derived analytics products.
  • Collaborate with Planet Federal’s Vice President of Customer Success and Post-Sales Engineering to verify that customer obligations are being met and our customers are delighted.
  • With Planet Federal’s Vice President of Customer Success and Post-Sales Engineering, collaborate with Planet’s Senior VP of Product to bring the government market perspective into Planet’s geospatial product development roadmap.
  • Understand the competitive landscape for Planet’s products and their proper positioning to take to assure a competitive advantage within the U.S. government. 
  • Interact with Planet Legal and Finance departments for any contract to be aligned with Planet’s products and policies. negotiate and close large-scale complex deals and drive sales revenue targets. 

Required Professional Experience:

  • Sales leadership at an executive level in a company of similar or larger size during a growth phase, with particular experience in leading a diverse team and building a unifying vision, mission, and culture.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in a start-up environment, with a track record of strong judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Demonstrated success finding and winning business with US Federal Government customers for geospatial and imagery products, including 15+ years experience selling those products to government customers and successfully navigating US Federal Government sales cycles.
  • Excellent relationships across the US Federal Government space and geospatial communities and the partner ecosystem.
  • Deep understanding of the value of commercial imagery in support of the US Federal Government's mission.
  • Extensive relationships and understanding of the US DoD/IC requirements process 
  • Extensive relationships and understanding of the USG policy, budget, and procurement processes
  • Excellent communication and diverse problem-solving skills.
  • Active Security Clearance.
