Jacobs Space Exploration Group (JSEG) is comprised of 10 companies and is located at Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, AL (ranked #11 in Best Places to Live by U.S. News). JSEG has been a primary contractor for NASA since 1989 and supports marquee NASA programs, including the Space Launch System, International Space Station, space optics fabrication, earth and space sciences and advanced propulsion system development. Position Description:

This position shall provide technical support to the ES11 formulation efforts for the Solar Plasma Imaging and Doppler ExploreR (SPIDER) proposal. Formulation efforts will result in the integration of a technical proposal to be delivered for review and potential selection for the next phase of the proposal competition. Technical support shall be in the form of serving in mission and instrument systems engineering roles and the assumption of leadership roles as necessary to include integration of engineering support. 


Typical products from the systems engineering discipline include, but are not limited to:

  • development of the concept of operations

  • development of top-level mission and instrument requirements and constraints

  • definition of system requirements and allocation of these requirements to the next level

  • defining internal and external interface requirements 

  • verification and validation plans

When in a leadership role the candidate will serve as the day-to-day technical manager and will work closely with the CE/PSE, Principle Investigator and the Project Manager to:

  • define the architecture, both technical and programmatic, for project execution

  • execute the architectural vision and maintain the technical baseline

  • coordinate the technical activities among bus, instrument, and ground system teams

  • integrate development of content and participate in the various reviews scheduled in addition to the site visit: Technical and Management Review, Blue Team, Red Team, Gold Team, etc, per the proposal schedule.

  • activities may also include:

    • development of trade studies

    • mission architecture

    • technology development roadmap/maturation

    • risk management

Qualifications:

  • BS degree in Engineering, Science or related technical field is required. Degree from an ABET accredited institution is preferred.

  • Minimum of 20 years experience is required.

  • Familiarity with NASA Systems Engineering principles and processes is required.

  • The candidate also requires a strong ability to frame complex problems, synthesize information, and develop and communicate solutions.

  • Must be proficient with oral , written communication and presentation skills.

  • Personnel will have a the specialized skill set that includes experience working as a Lead Systems Engineer on similar formation proposals to include:

    • leading the systems engineering discipline for projects in the formulation phase

    • proficiency in the development of requirements, verification and validation approaches, and technical concepts and analyses for robotic science missions and instruments.

Essential Functions

Work Environment: 

Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Some travel to other NASA Centers and customer locations will be required (nominally 0 to 20%, depending on project requirements.)

 

Physical Requirements: 

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and Jacobs facilities (10%).

 

Equipment and Machines: 

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance: 

Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

 

Other Essential Functions:

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.

 

Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required.
