Overview

Apply your knowledge in business administration, economics, communications, and marketing to promote the small business services of Spruce Root, a non-profit CDFI based in Juneau and Sitka, AK. As the Small Business Development Intern, you will learn about our Technical Assistance programs and processes for entrepreneurs. You will tell unique stories to promote Spruce Root’s work, products, and services, including interviewing, reporting, researching, writing, and editing. You will produce content for print and digital media, including newsletters, emails, blog posts, social media platforms, and Spruce Root’s annual report. 

This internship is located primarily in Juneau or Sitka, AK, with potential travel to other Southeast Alaska locations to learn about regional projects and Spruce Root partners. The internship office location is dependent on the selected intern’s preference.

Responsibilities

  • Provide support to lending staff in development and delivery of Technical Assistance services to entrepreneurs
  • Edit print and digital content for purpose of publication within Spruce Root’s brand, voice, and style
  • Conduct research and analysis of lending activities through client surveys
  • Learn about the needs of Southeast Alaska entrepreneurs through survey and research

Qualifications

  • Business administration experience or business college courses
  • Sealaska shareholder, descendant of a shareholder, or spouse of a shareholder
  • At least 18 years of age by start date
  • At least a 2.5 GPA
  • Must be currently enrolled in college or a vocational-technical school or a recent graduate (1-2 years) and have completed one year of school by the start date
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Major or Minor in Business, Communications, Marketing, or related field
  • Experience or knowledge of managing social media
  • Experience or knowledge of writing short blog-style web posts

Additional Requirements:

  • Be prepared to provide a writing sample.
  • You may be asked to provide proof of your status as a Sealaska shareholder, shareholder descendant, or shareholder spouse.
  • You must successfully complete a background check prior to onboarding at Sealaska.

Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee will primarily work in an office setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually minimal.
