Karna is seeking a part-time Social Media Specialist to join an upcoming project team for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP). NCHHSTP’s primary mechanism for supporting network partnerships is the National Prevention Information Network (NPIN). NPIN is an important source of CDC and partner evidence-based information and resources, serving professionals dedicated to the prevention of HIV, viral hepatitis, STDs, and TB, through digital media channels, and is congressionally mandated

to establish a clearinghouse to make information on AIDS available to partners.

The Social Media Specialist II will lead, manage and perform marketing and outreach efforts for the NPIN program. Specifically, this position will analyze the existing communication and marketing activities done through NPIN channels and feature recommendations on how to increase awareness and utilization of NPIN products and services among stakeholders.

*position is contingent on contract award*


  • Support health communication and promotion efforts with activities such as scientific releases, product launches and releases, and other events intended to support public health prevention partners
  • Develop and periodically update a content strategy/management plan
  • Create and maintain a social media marketing editorial calendar
  • Develop content to meet the needs of CDC and partners
  • Support development of materials and messages including graphic design services, social media posts with images, and graphics
  • Create a social media toolkit, Twitter Chat, and FBLive streaming for select activities
  • Manage the collection and curation of third-party content, creation of unique content, and collaboration with CDC and partners
  • Audit and update content regularly to ensure it is current and relevant
  • Manage and meet CDC technology and Section 508 requirements for use on third party and CDC Web platforms
  • Manage and monitor the NPIN Community Account: development of new groups, by supporting the non-technical aspects of creating public and private groups
  • Track and measure performance of all branded channels, including at least Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, Reddit, etc.
  • Ensure any products and deliverables that are developed meet clearance requirements
  • Ensure that OMB and IRB requirements are met for any information collected for audience testing or evaluation of materials
  • Collaborate with others on the team on marketing campaigns and communication and training product development and dissemination


  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field such as marketing, public relations, communications, journalism, or English
  • 1-3 years of digital media experience
  • Experience planning, organizing, and supporting the development and production of a wide variety of electronic communications
  • Intermediate MS Office skills
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud
  • Expertise with social media platforms, including analytics
  • Experience in the use of a variety of informational marketing and media methods such as graphic arts, design, illustration, photographs, computers, broadcast, etc.
  • Knowledge of media channels and marketing strategy
  • Experience in public health / healthcare, HIV/AIDS campaign experience preferred
