  • Develop and implement an integrated strategic communications and marketing plan to advance Hillsides brand identity, broaden awareness of its programs and priorities, and increase the visibility of its programs across key stakeholder audiences
  • Create public relations strategy that will allow Hillsides leadership to cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with targeted, high-level external audiences, including the media and key influencers
  • Identify challenges and emerging issues faced by the organization. Work with leadership team and staff to recognize internal and external communications opportunities and solutions, and define and execute appropriate strategies to support them
  • Serve as expert counsel to leadership team on reputation management, crisis communications and management, media relations, and marketing and branding issues, and execute spokesperson and crisis communications trainings to leadership team
  • Train staff on media interviews and presentations


  • Oversee development of all Hillsides print communications including the annual report, marketing collateral materials and electronic communications including Hillsides' websites and new media; manage relationships with associated vendors
  • Manage issues and communications efforts as necessary to ensure quick, effective, and positive response in the event of crisis situations
  • Serve as lead point person on breaking news media interactions that help promote and/or impact the organization
  • Exercise judgment to prioritize media opportunities, and prepare talking points, statements, presentations, and other supporting material as needed
  • Oversee the engagement, cultivation, and management of press relationships to ensure coverage surrounding Hillsides programs, special events, public announcements, and other projects
  • Oversee the day-to-day activities of the communications function including budgeting, planning, and staff development


  • Recruit and manage a communications team to support the development and execution of the communications strategy and branding
  • Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality
  • Mentor and develop staff using a supportive and collaborative approach on a consistent basis
  • Establish and monitor staff performance and development goals, assign accountabilities, set objectives, establish priorities, conduct annual performance appraisals, and administer salary adjustments

The essential functions include:


  • Responsible for all aspects  of communication and marketing; message development, planning, implementation, and evaluation of communications   undertaken by Hillsides, Hillsides Education Center, and Youth Moving On
  • Project management to include planning, organizing, securing, leading and controlling resources to achieve specific goals; e.g., branding, social media, etc.
  •  Develop plan and serve as a team leader for any crisis communications activities and serve as spokesperson as needed, orient and train staff accordingly. 
  • Write talking points for crisis communications activities
  • Generate communications for annual giving campaign
  • Create business development communications collateral, correspondence, marketing strategies and outreach plan
  •  Generate scripts, reports, correspondence to board of directors and board committees, and biographies, as needed
  • Supervise, including develop, write, design, budget, market, and oversee production of internal and external print and electronic collateral, including all major publications, in support of all special events, both revenue generating and visibility related activities
  • Provide staff support for board of directors’ committees, including ad hoc committees as assigned
  • Supervise, produce and maintain three websites and related electronic communications
  • Collaborate with program staff and consultants in implementing necessary communications and community outreach

Public and Media Relations

  •  Research and prospect for business development candidates
  •  Cultivate strategic collaborations with business community, donors, volunteers, and other targeted   audiences as identified in strategies
  •  Serve as media manager and primary contact for all media matters
  •  Develop and produce media releases, advisories, features, and produce public service announcements
  •  Generate scripts and produce videos, as necessary
  •  Compile and maintain media lists
  •  Cultivate media relationships and distribute press kits
  •  Conduct media trainings for board, staff, volunteers, and clients
  •  Conduct tours, as needed

Social Media

  •  Oversee the research and prospecting of social media influencers
  •  Oversee social media editorial calendars and implementation of tactics via Hootsuite
  •  Generate, facilitate and execute online fundraising plan
  •  Create and maintain blog for Chief Executive Officer
  •  Create, oversee the maintenance, and monitor Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, Flickr, Pinterest     accounts
  •  Integrate search engine optimization and search engine marketing
  •  Blog, as needed, based on events and topics

Public Affairs 

  •  Collaborate in the development and delivery of a comprehensive advocacy plan 
  •  Write blog entries for Chief Executive Officer, as needed
  •  Generate correspondence to elected officials and community leaders
  •  Serve as liaison to elected officials for community relations, as needed

Other Duties:

  •  Serve as a member of the agency’s Continuous Quality Improvement committee
  •  Other duties as required
